And if so, what precautions do you have in place to reduce these risks?
Cybersecurity is tricky to sum up in one solution as there are many factors that can contribute to threats. Not only this but as technology advances so do the risks to your business.
With this in mind, however, one thing that remains the same within all businesses is email. Email is commonly used by every employee and is hard to monitor, as information is as quickly sent out as it is received. Research shows that sensitive information is being shared frequently via email, proving that vulnerabilities are not always down to cybersecurity, but also human error.
What are the risks of email?
IT security is not always about cybercriminals hacking your data or breaching your systems, but can also be down to the training and processes you have in place as a business. Email and working from home go hand in hand as we have all been forced to talk more online rather than face to face.
Something as little as sending details or documents to your managers or colleagues now comes with a higher risk. Who else is intercepting this information? Is the recipient who you believe it to be? Many people will also be working from new or different devices whilst at home, and even different internet connections, which may not be as secure as those in the office. Studies also show that many people admit to working out of hours whilst at home, and can be juggling multiple jobs at the same time, therefore creating more risk as less attention may be given to that task.
But we aren’t here to scare you, we want to help inform you of the risks emails hold, and how to avoid those dangers, as once you press send your information is out there, with little chance to get it back.
How can I make my emails more secure?
With risks such as Spoofing, Phishing, Man in the Middle, or Whaling about there are proven to be many threats to any workplace. And although there is not a one-solution-fits-all approach, there are definitely ways you can work more securely when it comes to email, some of which include;
- Spam Filters – reduce the risk of receiving suspicious emails all together with a filter within your inbox designed to look for threats.
- Training – we all know how to send and receive emails, but are there processes in your workplace which you are unaware of e.g. what information you are sending and how it should be sent
- Double Check – it is always best to double-check anything if you are unsure e.g. if you are sending sensitive information, could this be done in 2 emails instead of one
- Word of mouth – talk to people within the office if you receive anything which doesn’t look right, chances are someone else may have received a similar thing
- Following Up – follow up with people if you haven’t received a response or double-check with someone in person if you feel suspicious about anything
